Abstract


Background: Pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption (PEIR) is a rare pathology in permanent teeth and occurs even less frequently in primary teeth.

Case description: This case report describes vital pulp therapy in a permanent and a primary tooth, respectively, presenting with pre-eruptive intracoronal resorptions. The literature on this rare dental pathology is reviewed.

Conclusion: Timely diagnosis of PEIR is important to prevent early loss of the tooth involved. Maintaining pulp vitality may be possible.


Introduction


The term pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption (PEIR), also referred to as PIR in some publications, describes a form of dental hard tissue resorption that begins before tooth eruption and affects the inner structure of the fully formed crown of a still unerupted tooth (Figs. 1a-b). Single case reports on this rare phenomenon can be found already in the 40ies of the last century.
